Our team is hard at work experimenting with eSIMs, and we're beginning to test them out with a select group of users on iOS. If you're eligible, you'll see a prompt to receive and activate your eSIM in the TextNow app menu. Stay tuned and keep your app updated to be the first to know!
How do I get an eSIM?
If you're in the beta testing group, you'll either see an option to Install your eSIM in the TextNow app menu or you will receive an eSIM when selecting Get Free Data or Go Wireless. We're not currently adding new users to the beta test, but be sure to keep your app up-to-date to stay in the loop on further releases!
How do I activate my eSIM?
- First, make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi, then open the TextNow app and go to My Account or the main menu, and select Install eSIM, Get Free Data, or Go Wireless.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until you reach Activate eSIM in Settings.
- You'll automatically be redirected into your iOS settings, when the Activate New eSIM notification appears, tap Allow.
- Tap Continue at the bottom of the screen.
- Select your new TextNow SIM as your Default Line and default for Cellular Data.
I’m not sure if my new eSIM is connected to the network, how can I check?
- Go back to Settings → Cellular.
- Tap your new eSIM line.
- Verify if your eSIM profile is listed and named as you originally named it. Also, confirm that the associated Network Selection is correctly showing as “TextNow”.
- Note: Your phone may automatically change the name you've given to your eSIM if other eSIMs or SIM cards are installed on the phone, so be sure to verify the correct network to confirm you're looking at the right eSIM profile.
- Make sure Turn On This Line is switched on.
- Go back to Settings → Cellular and repeat the steps for any other eSIMs or SIM cards on the device, but this time ensure Turn On This Line is switched off for any other eSIMs or SIM cards.
- Turn airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, and turn it off.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and try sending a text or making a call within the TextNow app.
How can I label my eSIM to keep better track of it within my iOS settings?
You can label your eSIM to keep it organized, which can be helpful if you have multiple SIMs. Once you select the eSIM to update the name, you can make sure it's the right one by verifying that “Network Selection” says “TextNow”.
- Go to Settings → Cellular → [Your TextNow eSIM].
- Tap Cellular Plan Label.
- Choose a name like Personal, Work, or create your own custom name, like TextNow.
- If you have more than one SIM (physical or eSIM), iPhone will ask how you want to use each:
- Default Line → Choose which line is used for calls and messages.
- Cellular Data → Pick which plan provides data.
- iMessage & FaceTime → Choose which number you want to use.
- You can change these anytime in Settings → Cellular.
I accidentally deleted my eSIM, what do I do?
If you delete your eSIM, you will need to download a new one through the TextNow app. Wait at least 30 minutes after deleting your eSIM, then open the TextNow app menu and click Install eSIM, Get Free Data, or Go Wireless.
