We've upgraded our wireless network to bring you better nationwide coverage and more affordable data options. Service on our previous network ends July 31, 2026, so if you're still using an older TextNow SIM, it's time to upgrade. The upgrade is free, and you'll keep your phone number, messages, and call history.
If you've already activated a new SIM since August 15, 2025, you're all set. You're on our new network, and no action is needed, even if you've received reminder messages from us since then.

Why is TextNow upgrading my plan?
We’ve switched carrier partners to give you better coverage and lower data pricing! Upgrading ensures your service works seamlessly with our improved network.
Will it work with my phone?
Only unlocked phones will work on our network. Additionally, for iPhones, your phone must be running iOS version 17.4 or higher. For Android, we recommend running Android 13 or higher for the best experience. If your device is running Android versions 9, 10, 11, or 12 please see the additional activation steps in this article.

How do I upgrade?
Make sure your TextNow app is updated to the latest version, if you have an update waiting in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store you'll need to complete that before beginning. Once your app is updated, open it and tap the upgrade message. The app will check your phone and walk you through one of these paths:
- eSIM: If your phone supports eSIM, you can activate it right in the app in just a few minutes. This is the fastest way to get connected before the deadline.
- Physical SIM: If your phone needs a physical SIM, confirm your mailing address in the upgrade flow and we'll ship you one for free. Delivery takes up to two weeks.
- Software update needed: If your phone's operating system is too old, you'll be prompted to update it first. Once it's updated, you can activate an eSIM.
How do I activate my new SIM?
If you're activating an eSIM, the app walks you through it in a few minutes.
To begin activating a new physical SIM card, be sure to remove your old SIM card and then click this link on your mobile device.
If you need more help, our SIM activation article covers every step, including inserting the SIM and setting the APN. After you upgrade, your old SIM will deactivate automatically. You don't need to do anything with it.
I ordered a SIM but it hasn't arrived. What should I do?
Physical SIMs take up to two weeks to arrive, and promotional SIM offers can sometimes take a little longer. If it's been more than two weeks, or you'd like to get connected sooner, open the TextNow app to see if your phone is eligible for eSIM activation, or reach out to our support team over chat.
I tap the upgrade button and nothing happens. How do I fix it?
Update your TextNow app to the latest version from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, then try again. Older versions of the app don't support the full upgrade experience.
Will I lose my number?
No! You'll keep your existing phone number, along with all of your messages and call history, and it'll automatically connect when you switch to your new SIM.
What if I'm on a monthly plan?
If you're using our recurring Month Pass, your billing cycle resets when you activate your new SIM and you won't be charged at activation. One month later, your service renews on our Unlimited Plan at $35.99/month. Cancel anytime.
If you're not on a recurring plan, you'll be connected to our Free Plan, which includes free unlimited talk and text plus 5G data for select apps. For more data, you can add an Unlimited Data Pass or subscribe to our Unlimited Plan with weekly or monthly billing.
What happens to my older data plan (1GB, 2GB, 5GB, etc.)?
Our legacy data plans aren't available on the new network. When you upgrade, your legacy plan ends and you'll start on the Free Plan, which gives you unlimited talk and text for free. If you need full data, you can choose one of our Unlimited Data Pass options.
We know some of you have been on these plans a long time, and we're sorry to see them go. They rely on our previous network, which is why we can't carry them over.
I got a message about free months of data. How does that work?
Your free Unlimited Data Month Pass begins automatically when you activated your new SIM. If you received a message from us offering additional free months of data, the credit is already on your account. It applies automatically when you activate on the new network and pick your plan, so there's no code to enter and nothing extra to do. If you're waiting on a new phone, the credit will still be there when you're ready.
Why did I receive an order confirmation email with a $4.99 SIM price?
Don't worry, you won't be charged. Even if your order confirmation shows the regular SIM pricing, we're covering the cost of your upgrade, so you won't see any actual charges.
What if I'm using a TextNow SIM card outside of the United States?
After July 30, TextNow Wireless cellular coverage is no longer available outside of the United States, impacting those using a TextNow SIM in Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. For more information, please see this article. If you're in the US, you can keep using TextNow wireless service by upgrading your SIM.
I live in the US but I’m traveling to Canada or Mexico. Does this affect me?
No. This page is about TextNow SIMs based outside the United States. If your line is based in the US, you can use it with roaming in Mexico on any wireless plan, and roaming in Canada on Plus or Unlimited.
